Bhutan Textile Yathra Charkab
early 20 sentury
background & patterns : Bhutanese hand-spun woolen yarn
From the Bumthang region of Bhutan,
this engaging textile is used as a 'raincloak',
with its lustrous wool an effective protection
against the inclement weather of the Himalayas.
Made from a single length of loomed 'yathra',
which is cut into panels and sewn together,
it is unique to this area which is justifiably famous
for these weavings.
These textiles are disappearing as new products
and materials become available.
